Volunteering with Purpose: Aligning Values with Meaningful Causes
Volunteering is not just about giving your time; it’s about giving your heart to causes that align with your deepest values and aspirations. When we volunteer for a cause that resonates with our soul, we not only make a positive impact on the world but also experience personal growth, fulfillment, and a deeper sense of connection to our purpose. With time and energy as precious commodities, consider not just completing tasks, but volunteering with purpose.
Understanding the Power of Purposeful Volunteering
Volunteering with purpose goes beyond simply lending a helping hand; it is about making a conscious choice to contribute to causes that reflect our values, beliefs, and passions. By aligning our volunteer efforts with our personal values and spiritual principles, we can create a ripple effect of positive change in the world while enriching our own lives in profound ways. Purposeful volunteering allows us to connect with our higher purpose, cultivate compassion and empathy, and contribute to the greater good of humanity.
Identifying Causes that Align with Your Values
Begin your journey of purposeful volunteering by reflecting on your core values, passions, and areas of interest. Consider what issues or causes resonate deeply with your heart and soul, perhaps:

Get specific. For example, “Education” is an issue/cause that I spend a lot of time volunteering in. But specifically, I am passionate about supporting children and staff in underserved and lower-income areas and schools to be sure they have the supplies and opportunities they need. In the past 8 years, I’ve organized donation drives for books, recess equipment, snacks, classroom seating, Band-Aids and nursing supplies, textiles and other Art room supplies, teacher appreciation meals and massages, classroom supplies such as markers and printer paper, and games for a lunchroom game cart. I’ve helped with a mobile vision screening service that gives free eye check-ups to children at schools. I’ve helped with fundraisers and school events. And I’ve been in many public school classrooms, doing everything from sanitizing desks to Kindergarten “Purposeful Play” to reading and doing Math flash cards one-on-one with students.
Next, research organizations, nonprofits, and grassroots initiatives that are making a difference in these areas and align with your values and goals. Look for volunteer opportunities that allow you to leverage your skills, talents, and expertise in service of causes you believe in.
Finding Meaningful Volunteer Opportunities
Once you have identified causes that align with your values, explore various volunteer opportunities available within those organizations or initiatives. Attend volunteer fairs, community events, or informational sessions to learn more about potential volunteer roles and how you can get involved. Reach out to local nonprofits, community centers, or religious organizations to inquire about volunteer opportunities in your area. Utilize online platforms and volunteer matching websites like VolunteerMatch and VolunteerLocal to discover volunteer opportunities tailored to your interests and availability.
Some of my absolute favorite organizations I’ve volunteered with include:
- 4-H
- AFS Intercultural Programs
- ASSE International Student Exchange Programs
- City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation – Woodland Cemetery Adopt-a-Block clean-ups (Des Moines, Iowa)
- Des Moines Public Schools (Des Moines, Iowa)
- Furry Friends Refuge (West Des Moines, Iowa)
